What is an API, and why should the Security & GRC professional care?

From a Security Operations perspective, APIs provide a communication means between access control or CCTV systems and D3's Incident Reporting, Dispatch or Guard Tour software. From an Enterprise Case Collaboration perspective, APIs provide a real-time data communication with HR management systems like SAP or Oracle PeopleSoft.
